From paralegal to solicitor in the UK

Paralegal work is no longer a dead end if your goal is to qualify. Under the current system, time as a paralegal can count directly toward becoming a solicitor. Here is how the route works and how to plan it.

The introduction of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination changed the picture for paralegals. Instead of needing a single formal training contract, you can now build the required experience through paralegal work and qualify by passing central assessments. That makes the paralegal job a genuine first step, not a detour.

The two things you need

To qualify as a solicitor through the SQE route you need two things in addition to the academic requirements: pass SQE1 and SQE2, and complete two years of qualifying work experience. Paralegal work is one of the most common ways people build that experience while earning.

What qualifying work experience means

Qualifying work experience is legal work that gives you the chance to develop the competences a solicitor needs. It can be made up of more than one role, including paralegal positions, and it has to be signed off by a solicitor or a firm’s compliance officer confirming you had that opportunity. The key point is that it does not have to be one single job or a traditional training contract. Several paralegal roles can add up.

Why paralegal experience helps beyond the rules

Even setting aside the formal credit, paralegal experience makes you a stronger candidate and a more useful newly qualified solicitor. You have seen real matters, you understand how a firm runs, and you have practised the core skills. Employers notice the difference between someone who has done the work and someone who has only studied it.

How to plan the move

  • Pick a role with real legal work: the experience only counts if the work lets you develop the competences. Substance matters more than the job title.
  • Keep a record: track the matters and skills you are developing from the start, so signing off the experience later is straightforward.
  • Talk to your supervisor early: tell them your aim. Many firms will support qualification and confirm experience if they know it matters to you.
  • Plan the assessments around work: many people prepare for SQE1 and SQE2 while working as a paralegal rather than studying full time.

Is it the right route for you?

If you want to be a solicitor specifically, this route lets you earn and gain experience instead of taking on debt and waiting for a training contract. If you would rather specialise in one area, the CILEX route may suit you better. The routes comparison lays out the trade-offs.
